In
these troubling times,
Leonard Cohen, poet,
monk, bohemian,
troubadour to a
generation once again
takes centre stage.
Hallelujah is a resurgent
hymn that has caught
the imagination and
hearts of millions
throughout the
world...

If you put hallelujah
cohen into Google you’re probably looking
to buy the classic penned by Leonard Cohen back
in 1984. But you’ll also be surprised to see a
plethora of cover versions of the song by a
number of other artists in recent times. The
most popular currently is the version by
Alexandra Burke, the winner of the X Factor
talent contest in the UK.
According to HMV her cover of the
Leonard Cohen Hallelujah has
also sparked a rival in popularity for the late
jeff
buckleys hallelujah version. In a
poll conducted by AOL music, 59%
favoured jeff buckleys hallelujah.
However, for cohen
hallelujah aficionados, the master is
still the best. Among the most interesting
facts about the song is that it originally had
80 verses, and it is played at 2 a.m. every
Saturday night in Israel.
But lest we take things too seriously, remember
the shrek
hallelujah? For the actual movie soundtrack
(the one heard while watching the movie),
Hallelujah is performed by
John Cale. When later released on CD, the
soundtrack album includes a performance by
Rufus Wainwright.
Cohen Hallelujah has many
Interpreters...The countless cover
versions of the coen
hallelujah loom larger than the original.
Over the years the debate has raged over which
of the more than one-hundred official covers
might be the definitive one. Among them is, of
course, Rufus Wainwright’s edition from the
Shrek soundtrack, but Dylan has also had a go
at it, as have Jon Bon Jovi, kd lang, and
Bono.
Hallelujah the
OC soundtrack is sung by Jeff Buckley from
his 1994 album Grace. it featured three times,
including the moment when the beautiful
Marissa dies in Ryan's arms. It's
this ability to tap into the emotions that has
led Hallelujah to become a
song to accompany sad moments on television
shows.
If you’re interested in playing the song on
guitar rather than just listening, you can get

chords here.
